What is it?

The Elder Nutrition Program, headed by the Older Americans Act, is one of the most visible federal programs for elders.

What does it do?

The Nutrition Program provides a nutritionally balanced, hot, noon meal to seniors age 60+, Monday through Friday, at either a congregate mealsite or delivered to their homes.  Weekend and evening meals may also be provided for those who need them.  A voluntary donation is requested.

A Congregate Site may be in a school, homeless shelter, community center or Senior Center.  In addition to the meal, opportunities are provided for social interaction and companionship, nutrition education and volunteer activities.

Home Delivered Meals are brought to the homes of homebound elders by trained drivers.  Often, the meal driver is the only person the elder sees on a regular basis.  Drivers may help to communicate the elders' needs to appropriate referral sources.

Nutrition is key to the health of older persons.  Medical professionals agree that improving the nutritional status of the elderly is the most practical and cost-effective of all approaches for prolonging good health and extending life expectancy.

Many elders do not eat adequately because:

  • their health and mobility is limited, impairing their capacity to shop and cook for themselves;

  • they are isolated or alone, diminishing the incentive to prepare and eat a meal;

  • they lack the skills to select and prepare nourishing well-balanced meals;

  • they cannot afford to do so.
